My name is Hiếu and my American name is Hugh as in Hugh Grant. I’m 30 years old, pretty old. I live in Brea, Orange County and I really like this place because there is a lot of sunshine.
These first few months in America were not easy for me. I had no car, so couldn’t go anywhere. Walking to the bus stop is quite scare, because we have to pass over the highway or freeway. Every day I walked about an hour to get to bus top. Sometimes the bus just passed me 5 second ago and I would wait about half an hour to 45minutes. Living without car in California is such a big inconvenience. I felt like a little 7 years old boy. Like most of Vietnamese people, I paid money to learn driving. My wife and I both have driving licenses. We purchased a PT Cruiser , model 2002 in red. Our life have for the better I feel very happy.
PT Cruiser car for you is normal or ugly, but for me it’s something special. I like expensive cars, but I love my PT Cruiser, more than any other luxury car, (more than the Mustang, more than Cadillac, Lexus ). It’s not only a vehicle, for me, it was my dream and now it is like a friend or a little brother. I find my car is lovely and have a wonderful design. When buying it, I thought that all ours dreams can come true if we choose to pursue it, try and overcome all the challenges. Of course, if we work hard, the dream will come true soon; if we are lazy, it also come true, but late, 15 or 20 years ... even 70 years. Driving in America is really interesting. But I don’t like driving on the freeway where I usually get nervous.
I go to California State University Fulllerton to study English and Education. It is a big University and I find it’s very nice. As a member of this school, I feel happy, and pride too. One day, if I have a PhD degree in this school, it will be wonderful.
I live in an American family. We rent a small room in their house which we called ‘’Homestay’’. Most people in this family are deeply religious. They are not rich, but I saw it was right, appropriate for me. Living in a luxury family might not comfortable for me. The house lord lady and her husband were in love, but suddenly they got a divorce then she was very sad. We listened and shared the sadness with her . She had some strong characteristics, she tried to smile all the times and she worked hard to overcome it. I don’t expect that I will be in similar situations, but I learn from her how to overcome all difficulties.

My wife usually talked to the house lord lady. She studied piano with her, shared with her some thoughts. She likes to cook Asian food at home, and the Americans do not like that smell at all. They are polite and don’t complains anything but they usually open all the windows, turn on the fans even we tried to open all the doors, burn the candles. I felt a little afraid, but it was the little happiness of my wife.
I like America’s life but I will turn back to Vietnam next year to work. And I usually tell my self that I‘m happy and lucky.
